Where to begin with te story of a man and Tiger on a life boat for more than 200 hundred days. Yann Martel has written a beautiful book with descriptions that jump off the page. I truly enjoyed this book, of course there where some slow parts, but nothing that made me want to stop reading. Pi is an extraordinary character full of wisdom, questions and an unwavering faith. There is so much information in this book about the animals that he encounters, that was laid into the story in such a way that it wasn’t a distraction from the story but a necessary part. At the end of the story there is a question of whether Pi’s story is actually real? Was he in fact on the boat with a Tiger and various other animals or did he change real people into the animals that he grew up around? Of course the answers to these questions are left to the reader to decide, but I like the added depth that it gives the story.

Overall, I highly recommend this book. Be weary though of his most desperate times in the life boat, these descriptions aren’t the best of those with weak stomachs.

Not knowing anything about Hemingway going into this book, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have no idea how historically accurate it is but I couldn’t help but fall in love with the people that came off the pages. This is the love story between Hemingway and his first wive Hadely. Their story is heartbreaking and wonderful at the same time. Paula McLain did a great job of keeping me interested and turning pages. The only thing that I didn’t like was how time passed. The dates that were provided were scattered, and it was hard to keep track of how much time had passed. I was a little skeptical going in because of all the books that are about the wife’s of famous men seem to make the wife out to be this great and terrible victim, I don’t think that is necessarily the case here. Sure you could argue it that way but, in the end I felt that both Hadley and Hemingway were the victims of their own lives and choices.
I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in Hemingway, Paris in the 1920’s, or just a good read.
